Sunclaw and Phoenix - When It Started
Faith has been broken, tears must be cried
Let’s do some living after we die
- Wild Horses, The Rolling Stones
It was a flash.
Okay, mother! Me and Sunpaw will be back soon!
A flash of memories.
Make sure you don’t go near the thunderpath. That’s around kittypet territory.
Why did we not listen?
I know, mother. We’ll be going around.
And it cost us… a happy family.
Cinderpaw looked at me with a cheeky grin. “Want to check the thunderpath? We never really go around there!”
I smiled. “Sure!”
We trotted down the forest path to the path of monsters itself. We carefully checked around - still unnecessary since monsters rarely go past this area - but still safe than sorry! There were a group of kittypets on the other side and they noticed us.
”Ooh, looksie! Baby clannies!” One jeered. I remember his appearance. Red except for a ginger underbelly, ears and paws. His tail was large and bushy, and his claws seemed to shoot out of his paws jaggedly. “Whatcha doing near the twolegsies? Wanna get some foodie?”
”Stop talking like that, you crowfood kittypets.” I snapped. “We have no interest in your little twolegs. Go off. Soft fleabags.”
Cinderpaw shot me a glare. I ignored it and stared at the kittypets.
”Oh darling-warling!” said the first kittypet. “We’re leaving our twolegsies and seeking a life as rogues. The name’s Phoenix. Remember that.”
”Okay?” I grunted.
Cinderpaw bared her teeth. “Well don’t go near ThunderClan territory!”
”Oh ThunderClannies? The rogues say those are the worst. Soft? Disgusting? Mousebrains in general?”
”You scum!”
”I’ll bet that you’re the scumies, goldie.”
With that, he launched himself on me suddenly. Not even all of the training in the world could have prepared an inexperienced apprentice like me the chance to fight. That Phoenix cat must have been training somehow. It’s the only reasonable explanation. The other cats joined him and Cinderpaw fell into the pile.
My fur was being torn off, that was what I felt it was like. But in reality, all I got was that long scar down my back. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw… rogues. A group of them joining in. Maybe it was the ones that Phoenix had been talking about.
I collapsed and rolled out of the scuffle somehow. But I couldn’t see Cinderpaw. Where was she? Where was my sister?
As I started to lose consciousness, I saw her. Her fur was matted with blood. And my eyes struggled to remain open.
She was mouthing something to me - or was she saying something to me? I couldn’t hear anything.
That was when I blacked out.
That was the last time I saw her.
